South Korea was awarded the right to host the XXIV Olympiad Summer Olympics, an international multi-sport event celebrated from 17 September to 2 October 1988 in Seoul. When I arrived in Korea during May 1985, massive construction to host the event was well underway. The country had committed a vast amount of resources to ensure that their arrival on the world stage would be unblemished and their Olympics mascot, Hodori, provided assurance.
