Dusky Leaf Monkeys

Owing to its interesting looks, appearance and size, the dusky leaf monkey or spectacled Langur is listed among the most attractive animals in the world. A species of primate in the family Cercopithecidae, it is native to Malaysia and Thailand. The different subspecies are differentiated by the color of their fur, and these monkeys are very docile and calm in contrast to other monkeys.

This is an easily identifiable species, with thick white eye-rings and pale pinkish skin around the mouth, which is devoid of fur. Depending on the amount of ambient light its body fur can appear greyish brown, dark grey or jet black, and a degree of brown. The fur on the crown, legs and tail is lighter. Normally infants are pale yellow to orange in color.

Photographs

The Dusky Leaf Monkey begin to invade my neighborhood about two months ago (May 2019). I live in the Tanjung Tokong area of Penang and its easily accessible to monkeys being close to Penang Hill and its condense wooded environs.

Images were captured with the Nikon Coolpix 900 camera (focal length 24-2000mm), an astounding camera but one that I have not used very much, relying mainly on the Nikon D7000. These monkeys are extremely fast and to avoid having to tinkle with camera settings while I attempted to track them while using extreme focal lengths, I put the camera in automatic mode and set the image quality to FINE and the image size at 16M. It seems to have worked well, but there is a noticeable lack of sharpness and detail in some images that could have resulted from camera shake. I’ll practice more with this camera and hopefully improve image quality.
