Ariel Launching Speech
“Ariel is named after an old clipper ship which had come close to winning The Great Tea Race of 1866. She was designed and built specifically to take part in the Transpacific Yacht Race or Transpac, an offshore race starting in San Pedro, California and ending off Diamond Head in Hawaii, a distance of around 2,225 nautical miles. Started in 1906 and hosted by the Los Angeles Yacht Club, it is one of yachting’s premier offshore races. The event is famous for fast downwind sailing under spinnaker in the trade winds. In the 1950’s it took the fastest boats around 11 days to complete the race.” Read the entire speech here: Aerial.
A Rebuilt Classic Sailing Yacht
Franz R. Hartstein, the boat owner, carried out an extensive rebuilding of his classic sailing yacht, Ariel. The project spanned an estimated seven years, the sixty-five-year-old vessel was completed refitted, and all wood for the hull, deck, and the interior was replaced.
