Taking on the World, One Space at a Time

Self-interest means different things for different people. For me it has more to do with personal development, maintaining a global vision and having the ability to express myself by demonstrating an abiding appreciation for a diverse humanity made possible through its oneness.

My aim is to keep awareness alive, stay active, acquire a spiritual perspective, seek virtuous beginnings to achieve positive outcomes, and always strive to expand my horizons.

Also included are hikes, treks, and scuba experiences planned for 2018 and 2019.

Today’s Featured Hike

Cape of Good Hope, South Africa 2014

“The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. A common misconception is that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa. This misconception was based on the misbelief that the Cape was the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.”

Navigational Beacons

‘The Portuguese government erected two navigational beacons, Dias Cross and the Da Gama Cross (the latter seen above), to commemorate Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias the first explorers to reach the Cape. When lined up, the crosses point to Whittle Rock, a large, permanently submerged shipping hazard in False Bay. Two other beacons in Simonstown provide the intersection.’

My Travel History

My travel history is quite extensive and I make no attempt to list it all here. My aim is to concentrate on sports activities I most enjoy (old and new) to give an idea of the extent of my engagement.

Background

The timestamp on the photos taken during this hike is November 2014. This is only one of many hikes/treks taken at various locations during my six years in South Africa, primarily Cape Town, though I’ve traveled throughout the country. I hope you will come along for other adventures to be presented.

Some older hikes/treks in the US, Philipines, and South Africa were recorded on different apps. The will be made available in addition to my hiking (volksmarching) experiences in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

My more recent hikes can be found on ‘ramblr’. Click above image to access.

My Recent Posts

Posts will include information and photographs of my recent activities and also some taken from my personal archives that took place over several years.

San Francisco CA

San Francisco is a city with a long and rich history. Founded in 1776 by Spanish settlers, the city was originally named “Yerba Buena” after the native plant that was abundant in the area. In 1846, the city was renamed “San Francisco” after Saint Francis of Assisi.

Mouille Point

Mouille Point, Cape Town, South Africa. Tristan Lodge is located at No. 25, Beach Road, Mouille Point, where my son, Na’il, and I resided for about two years. Mouille (“MOO-lee”) Point is referred to as an affluent suburb of Cape Town, being very small, it is accessible by Main Road directly from Cape Town proper.

Donghuamen Night Market Beijing China

Donghuamen Night Market is located north of Donganmen Street in Beijing’s Dongcheng District. One can find a row of unusual food stalls. An array of Chinese food delicacies are on display with people bustling around to experience some new tastes.

Dining Accra Ghana

Dining Accra, Ghana. I arrived in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, on 26 December 2023 for an eight-day stay, departing 3 January 2024 for my return to Malaysia. In Accra, I will attend the AfroFuture Musical Festival and, while in-country, learn about the people, experience their cuisine, and understand more about their way of life.

Cape Coast Castle Accra Ghana

Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty “slave castles”, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese “feitoria” or trading post, established in 1555, which they named Cabo Corso.

Accra Ghana December 2023

Accra is the capital city of Ghana, its largest city, and administrative, communications, and economic center of the country. Beginning in the late thirteenth century, Ghana was inhabited by a number of ancient kingdoms, including an inland kingdom within the Ashanti Confederacy and various Fante states along the coast.

Travel Distant Lands

Travel Distant Lands is a display, among others, on my Dawn’s New Day website. It represents a continuing effort on my part to acquaint those not familiar with my background, travels, experiences, desires, and special interests.

Scuba Diving

When you go scuba diving you are going for a longer period of time underwater to enjoy the beautiful world of coral reefs and aquatic animal life using scuba gear to breathe. I find this to be an immensely enjoyable experience.

My 2019 Scuba Destinations

1. East Malaysia

Under consideration is Sabah for world-class diving at Sipadan Island, Layang-Layang Island and macro dives at Mabul Island.

2. Palawan, Philippines

Tubbataha Reef is a Natural Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site well known for it’s vast marine biodiversity.

3. Indonesia

Lombok has top areas for exploration that include Belongas Bay, Kuta, Tampah and Gerupuk Bay.

Borneo Divers. Location: Mabul Resort , Sabah, Malaysia (2017).

My Upcoming Treks 2019-20

I plan a series of treks for 2019 and into 2020 mainly in places I have not previously visited. These will extend over several days in areas known for their challenges and pristine environment.

Tips For Safety on Trails & Mountains

Hiking, climbing, or touring through the mountains to achieve amazing experiences and lasting impressions should only be the second most important point, the first being safety. This involves proper planning before the trip begins to help avoid potentially difficult unforeseen occurrences. You should always have the correct answers ready if faced with problem circumstances.

Right: On my way to Braunschweiger-Hut a German Alpine Club mountain refuge hut at the Mittelbergferner Glacier in the Ötztal Alps, Tirol. Its the highest accommodation along the E5 long distance hiking trail (1983).

Below: My son, Na’il, exploring the beach in Camps Bay, South Africa (2005).

Don't Miss a Beat!

As you can see Na’il is contemplating the deeper meaning of life in preparation to successfully engage those challenges necessary to strengthen character and solidify a spiritual perspective; first up, crush seashells!
