Ng Chai Tiam
Mr. Ng Chai Tiam performs the art of Chinese seal engraving. When at his shop, located in the historic section of George Town in Penang, Malaysia, he is often seen working at a table near its outside entrance front entrance. Durning morning hours, a friend usually stops by to spend time talking, drinking coffee, and discussing local topics.
Mr. Ng first opened his business around 1970-71, after returning to Penang from China where he spent time traveling extensively in various regions of that country. After relocating his business a few years ago to its current location, he has since established permanency in the area.
My Chinese Chop
In 2017, I approached Mr. Ng and asked if he would do a special engraving of a Chinese chop that I had in mind. After making a few suggestions, he agreed and immediately started working to engrave the design concept. After about a week, he presented the newly completed chop. The results of Mr. Ng’s work can now be displayed.
Fu Huai Zhe
傅懷哲
The wording on the chop is engraved in ancient Chinese script. It contains my full given name (Terry Nelson Randolph), my Chinese name (傅懷哲, Fu Huai Zhe; from Taiwan), company (Prallagon), and a Baha’i religious symbol.
The Art of Chinese seal engraving
In 2009, the Art of Chinese Seal Engraving was inscribed on the United Nations Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
