Where’s the Beef?
“With the largest fed-cattle industry in the world, the United States is also the world’s largest producer of beef, primarily high-quality, grain-fed beef for domestic and export use.” The total U.S. meat consumption is measured in ‘billion pounds’. However, though meat consumption in the U.S. has dropped off slightly in recent years (at 270.7 pounds per person a year) people in the United States still eat more meat per person than in almost any other country.
I, like almost everyone else in the U.S., grewup eating beef cooked in a variety of ways, such as: hamburger, steak sandwiches, barbecued beef, beef soup, etc. So, during my recent trip to the United States my minds-eye turned to steak. I had a craving for well-flavored, sizzling, medium rare (more on the rare side) T-bone, porterhouse, or a new york strip steak. The question then becomes where do I find such a ‘lovely creature’ and not be disappointed with pretenders. Problem solved! I enjoyed an early dinner at a LongHorn Steak House located in Winchester, Virginia.
